Cameroon is not a place where many cigars are made — it is a place where one of the world's most coveted wrapper leaves is grown. "Cameroon" wrapper, grown in Cameroon and the neighboring Central African Republic, is prized for its fine "tooth," its oils, and a sweet, spicy character that has defined some of the most beloved cigars in the world, even though those cigars are rolled far away.
The Story
Cameroon wrapper nearly disappeared as a commercial crop. The Meerapfel family — tobacco traders across many generations — is widely credited with rescuing and sustaining Cameroon wrapper production, continuing to grow and export the leaf after the French government withdrew from the region, and later introducing a seal of authenticity to guarantee genuine Cameroon leaf.
The Tobacco
Cameroon leaf traces to Sumatra-seed tobacco brought to central Africa by Dutch colonists in the early 1900s, with cultivation expanding under French colonization. It is used almost exclusively as a WRAPPER: a thin, elastic leaf whose signature bumpy 'tooth' holds aromatic oils, giving notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, sweet cedar and light cocoa in a mild-to-medium body. It is genuinely rare — low yields, hand harvesting, and difficult growing conditions keep supply tight.
What to Expect
As a wrapper, Cameroon leaf tends toward sweet spice — cinnamon, nutmeg, sweet cedar, toast, light cocoa — in a mild-to-medium, aromatic, complexity-driven profile. These are tendencies of the leaf, not rules for any finished cigar.

Made In vs Tobacco From
Cameroon is the clearest case of why Cigarato separates where a cigar is MADE from where its TOBACCO comes from. Some of the most iconic Cameroon-wrapped cigars — Arturo Fuente's Hemingway and Don Carlos among them — are manufactured in the Dominican Republic, not in Cameroon. Their Cameroon identity lives in the wrapper leaf, not the factory. So Cigarato does not list any cigar as 'made in Cameroon'; this page is about the leaf. When our tobacco-provenance data is fully verified, this hub will be able to show the cigars that wear genuine Cameroon wrapper — as a tobacco relationship, never as a manufacture claim.
