The Story
Dominican cigar making expanded dramatically in the later twentieth century, drawing on Cuban seed varieties and the expertise of families who left Cuba. The Cibao Valley in the north became the center of its tobacco growing, and towns such as Santiago and Tamboril grew into hubs of hand-rolling. Over time the country became home to some of the most recognized names in the cigar world and the largest exporter of handmade cigars.
What to Expect
Dominican cigars tend toward smooth, refined and well-balanced, with cedar, cream, wood and nutty notes; blends range from mild and approachable to rich and full. These are tendencies rather than rules — the country produces both gentle Connecticut-wrapped cigars and powerful, full-bodied blends.
